Diesel engines are quite powerful and incredibly reliable. There’s a good reason why so many people still use this type of engine when other options are available. Still, getting the most from your engine means dedicating time to understanding the ins and outs of its operations. When an issue begins to develop, knowing what signs to look for can make all the difference in catching the problem before it spirals out of control. Look over these points to see if your engine needs some work.

A Black Cloud

By design, a diesel engine generates exhaust during the process of combustion. While a bit of this smoke is normal, you want to be mindful of the color and thickness. The exhaust should always look somewhat translucent and white, if visible at all. If you notice the exhaust begins to take on a darker hue or is coming out entirely black, it could be a strong indication that your engine needs attention. Switch the engine off, give it a moment, and take a closer look at the components.

Old Oil

Changing out the oil is a crucial step when it comes to almost any engine. The longer oil is in use, the less useful it is. In fact, the oil can actually start to corrode parts of your engine when left for longer than is intended. Take a look at your oil on a regular basis and check for signs of oxidation or other indications that the oil is not up to par. Oxidized oil is most common with engines in vehicles that have been sitting dormant for extended periods of time without use.

Worn Parts

There are a number of critical parts involved with a typical diesel engine. If even one of these components takes on damage, it can lead to the total destruction of your engine. Every couple of weeks, take a look at the engine and see how everything is holding up. By doing this, you will catch a problem early and know when to swap out and an old piece for newer AirDog parts. Developing this habit might be difficult at first, but practice will help you make it a part of your routine.

Though it is a powerful option, you must dedicate a lot of time and attention to the maintenance of your diesel engine. Develop a process of inspecting and repairing the engine that works best for you and discover how a bit of extra care can go a long way.
